The MAS is a platform for running real-time IP based multimedia applications. It must process each IP packet of a multimedia stream, each voice packet, within a fixed amount of time, generally 20 ms. It is imperative that the amount of processing required of the MAS in the worst case not exceed its capacity in terms of processor speed, cache size, or memory size. To ensure that the capacity of the MAS is not exceeded, two steps must be taken.
